MENTAL HEALTH OFFICER

MENTAL HEALTH OFFICER

The concept of the Community Mental health Officer came about when several advocacy groups such as National Alliance Mentally Ill (NAMI)/Shoals, Mental Health Courts and Probate Judges saw a need to have a law passed to develop a program to divert the mentally ill from jail to a mental health facility.

Prior to the implementation of the Community Mental Health Officer:

- law enforcement was not prepared to deal with the mentally ill.
- family members of the mentally ill distrusted law enforcement.
- law enforcement response often resulted in arrest and injury.

Since the implementation of the Community Mental Health Officer:

- law enforcement has a tool to use in dealing with the mentally ill
- family members of the mentally ill request the Community Mental Health Officer
- most patients are taken to a Mental Health facility rather than to jail.
